Aerodynamic Interaction of Migratory Birds in Gliding Flight

نویسندگان

چکیده

(1) Background: Many studies suggest that migratory bird groups fly in a V-formation to improve their aerodynamic efficiency, the goal being reduce energy expenditure longer distances. To further validate this hypothesis, we numerically simulated interaction of two gliding birds and evaluated forces as function spacing. (2) Methods: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used model flow pattern around wake Canada geese flying at an altitude 1000 m speed 13.9 m/s. (3) Results: The post-processing 3D results revealed complex structure composed contra-rotating vortices developing wing tip. (4) Conclusions: In plane perpendicular main direction, showed bird’s could be broken down into distinct zones: downwash zone upwash zone, latter by formation expenditure. our study suggested optimal wingtip spacing -26cm maximize lift/drag ratio characterizes efficiency.

Aerodynamic characteristics of flying fish in gliding flight.

The flying fish (family Exocoetidae) is an exceptional marine flying vertebrate, utilizing the advantages of moving in two different media, i.e. swimming in water and flying in air. Despite some physical limitations by moving in both water and air, the flying fish has evolved to have good aerodynamic designs (such as the hypertrophied fins and cylindrical body with a ventrally flattened surface...

Aerodynamics of Gliding Flight in a Falcon and Other Birds

An interesting characteristic of avian gliders is their ability to soar or remain aloft without flapping their wings for long periods. There are two ways to do this. In static soaring a bird maintains or gains altitude by gliding in air that has an upward velocity component equal to or greater than the bird's sinking speed. In dynamic soaring a bird uses changes in the horizontal wind-velocity ...

Serological Monitoring of Avian Influenza in Migratory Birds of Iran

Although migratory waterfowl is well known to be a major reservoir for avian influenza virus (AIV), there are only few recently published reports about the seroprevalence of AIV in this group of birds. To investigate the AIV antibody status in migratory waterfowl of Iran, we collected 217 serum samples from 25 different species of waterfowl during 2003 and 2004. These serum samples were teste...

Comparing Aerodynamic Efficiency in Birds and Bats Suggests Better Flight Performance in Birds

Flight is one of the energetically most costly activities in the animal kingdom, suggesting that natural selection should work to optimize flight performance. The similar size and flight speed of birds and bats may therefore suggest convergent aerodynamic performance; alternatively, flight performance could be restricted by phylogenetic constraints. We test which of these scenarios fit to two m...

A computational study of the aerodynamic performance of a dragonfly wing section in gliding flight.

A comprehensive computational fluid-dynamics-based study of a pleated wing section based on the wing of Aeshna cyanea has been performed at ultra-low Reynolds numbers corresponding to the gliding flight of these dragonflies. In addition to the pleated wing, simulations have also been carried out for its smoothed counterpart (called the 'profiled' airfoil) and a flat plate in order to better und...
